A vehicle’s title is one of the most important documents related to the vehicle; without it, you can’t prove ownership which means you also can’t do things like sell or trade the vehicle.

Fortunately, Mississippi makes it easy to replace a damaged or lost title.

Replace a Mississippi Motor Vehicle Title

If you lose your car title or it becomes damaged, the first thing you must do is download an Application for Replacement Certificate of Title from the Mississippi (MS) Department of Revenue (DOR) website.

To complete the duplicate title form write or type in the below information:

  • Make, year, and vehicle identification number (at the top of the application). If you're not sure, you can probably find this information on your vehicle registration.
  • Motor vehicle title number.
  • Your first and last names.
  • Street mailing address (including city, state, and zip code).
  • Indicate whether you are submitting the application due to a stolen, damaged, or lost title.
You do not have to submit a copy of the vehicle’s bill of sale as you would if you were completing a title transfer. However, if the auto is financed, the lienholder must authorize the DOR to release the replacement title to you.

Pay the $9 title replacement fee. Make your check or money order out to the Mississippi Department of Revenue. Mail your fee and completed application to:

Mississippi Department of Revenue
Title Bureau
PO Box 1383
Jackson, MS 39215

It takes between two to four weeks to receive new titles in the mail. Should you submit your lost title application online using the MS FastTrack system, it will cost you $39. However, you can receive your replaced title within 72 hours.

If the lienholder does not authorize the DOR to send you the title, the title will be sent to the lienholder until the balance of the auto loan is paid off.
