Registering a Motor Vehicle for the First Time in Missouri

To register your vehicle in Missouri, you’ll need to gather up the applicable documents and fees, as well as bring your vehicle in for emissions testing.

Required Documentation to Register a Motor Vehicle in Missouri

Documents that you need for vehicle registration are:

  • Motor vehicle title (if the vehicle is financed, ask the lien holder for a copy of the title).
  • Bill of sale or purchase receipt.
  • Insurance policy or insurance card.
  • Statement of non-assessment (you can get the statement from your county tax collector’s office).
  • Certificate that your auto passed a smog test at an authorized inspection station.
Complete Form DOR-108 (Application for Missouri Title and Application). Areas on the form that you will populate include:

  • Your first and last names.
  • Contact information (street mailing address and telephone number).
  • Vehicle identification number.
  • Make, model, and year of the auto.
  • Lienholder name and address.

Emissions Testing and Registration Fees

Have an emissions inspection or smog check conducted on the auto before you visit a local DOR office to complete the registration process. The emissions testing cannot be conducted more than 60 days before you register the vehicle.

Pay the $11 title and registration fee. Motor vehicles are titled and registered simultaneously for the first time in MO.

If you pay an additional $3.50 you can register your auto for one full year. For $7 you can register the motor vehicle for two years.

Use a check or money order to pay the fees. Submit fees with the completed application at a local DOR service center. Should you choose to mail the application and fees in, address the envelope to:
