Does Missouri require an inspection for vehicle registration? Missouri
Certain inspections must be conducted on your auto before you complete the car registration and registration renewal processes in Missouri (MO).
Licensed inspection stations are listed at the DOR and MO State Highway Patrol websites. As of 2010, there were about 3,400 inspection stations in the state. Contact the one you plan to visit to find out how the inspection fees will add to your regular registration fees.
Motor vehicles located in the city of St. Louis and in the counties of Franklin, Jefferson, St. Louis, and St. Charles are required to pass an emissions or smog check as well. Make sure that you get a copy of your auto’s smog check or emissions testing report before you leave the inspection station.
You will present this report to the DOR clerk to complete the register car process. Both the safety and the emissions or smog tests must be completed within 60 days of registering the auto.
NOTE: Starting January 2010, autos that are five years or younger do not have to undergo a safety inspection in MO.
