Register Car in MT and Obtain a Vehicle Registration Certificate

To apply for car registration, visit your local MVD office (in most cases this will be your county treasurer) with:

  • A car title. It must be properly assigned. Title signatures must be notarized if a title transfer occurred.
  • A completed Application for Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle. The application can be downloaded from the MVD's website.
  • A bill of sale.
  • Payment for registration fees. Rates vary, contingent on a vehicle's age, license plate (standard versus specialty) and if your county imposes a county option tax. For help in pinpointing an exact fee, contact your county treasurer.

A copy of your vehicle registration receipt must be kept in your vehicle at all times.

Register Car After Relocating to Montana

You must register your vehicle with the MVD within 60 days of establishing residency.

Emissions Inspection for Smog

Unlike many other states, Montana does not make passing a smog check (emissions testing) or a safety inspection a requirement for vehicle registration.
