Duplicate Titles

If you discover your car title missing, it's in your best interest to replace now rather than later. Unlike a lost registration card, you do not need to carry a title when driving, dimming the urgency behind ordering a duplicate title. But when the time comes to turn the car over and complete a title transfer, you're going to need proof of title. And, depending on the buyer, you could jeopardize the sale if you must delay the transition to replace the lost title.

How to Replace Lost Title in Montana

Here's what to do:

  • Complete an Application for Replacement Certificate of Title (form MV7). Be sure to include the vehicle identification number (VIN). This form can be conveniently downloaded from the MVD's website.
  • Write a check for $10.
  • Send the application and check to:

    Title and Registration Bureau
    1003 Buckskin Drive
    Deer Lodge, MT 59722-2375

NOTE: Applying for a duplicate title does not require a bill of sale.

The duplicate title will void the original title. This will be clearly stated on the replacement title.
