Personalized and specialty plates will cost more than a regular license plate, and there are a few extra steps that need to be taken before you can order your plates.

Nevada Personalized Plates, Vanity Plates and License Plates

Before submitting an application for a custom license plate, you'll need to decide on at least three numbers. When deciding, keep in mind of the following restrictions:

  • Depending on license plate style, you're limited to a maximum of five to seven characters for a large plate, and four to six on a small plate (for motorcycles).
  • You cannot use symbols or punctuation.
  • The DMV cannot issue plates for numbers already in use. If needed, the DMV's website offers an online plate search.
  • The DMV will reject any submission deemed as offensive or in bad taste.
To apply for a personalized plate, provide the DMV with:

  • A completed application. There are different applications for different personalized plate styles (standard, military, professional firefighters, volunteer firefighters, Masons).
  • Payment of custom license plate fees, which vary by plate style, range from $36 to $96.

You can order in person, by fax or by mail. If you order by mail (address is on the application) or fax ([775] 684-4797) and pay by credit card, you must also include a Credit Card Authorization form.

NOTE: Plate fees are on top of Nevada's regular registration rates.

NV Specialty Plates

The DMV also offers a massively long list of specialty plates, ranging from military service to classic vehicles to Nevada landmarks like the Hoover Dam and Pyramid Lake. Fees and application requirements vary, especially for military and firefighter plates. For exact details, visit the DMV's website.
