NH Safety Inspection

All vehicles registered in New Hampshire must go through a safety inspection within 10 days of receiving their registration.

NH Smog Check/Emissions Testing

In addition to the safety inspection, basically all gasoline-powered cars made after 1995 that weigh less than 8501 pounds must pass an annual emissions test. For light-duty diesel passenger vehicles, it's after 1996.

Again, the testing must be completed within 10 days of the registration.

Locations

The tests can be conducted at one of the dozens of state-approved inspection stations scattered throughout New Hampshire. Motorists can usually have both the smog check and the safety check completed on the same visit.

Inspection Fees

Be aware the DMV doesn't regulate the rates charged for these inspections. So, it's up to each station to set their fees. If cost is a concern, call the station ahead of time to set how much they charge.

Failing the Tests

Vehicles that can't pass both tests must be repaired and brought back for testing within 60 days of the failure date.

Additional Testing Info

Visit the New Hampshire OBD & Safety Testing (NHOST) site for a list of inspection stations and for more information regarding the tests. Or, call (800) 295-5276.
