Generally speaking, all gasoline-powered cars made after 1995 that weigh less than 8501 pounds must pass an annual smog check. (For light-duty diesel passenger vehicles, it's after 1996.)

Where to Test and Costs

Emissions testing can be completed at any of the many state-licensed inspection stations located throughout New Hampshire.

The fees vary by the station, and aren't controlled by the DMV. So, you might want to call the station before making the trip. You can find a complete list of inspection stations on the New Hampshire OBD & Safety Testing (NHOST) site.

NH Safety Inspection

Besides the emissions testing, New Hampshire vehicles must also pass a yearly safety inspection. This can usually be performed at the same time of the smog check.

Failing the Tests

Should your car fail either of the required tests, you have up to 60 days to correct the issues and bring the vehicle back for its re-test.

Additional NH Inspection Information

Visit the NHOST site for complete details about the program, or call (800) 295-5276.
