The MVD does require an emissions inspection but only for Bernalillo County, which encompasses Albuquerque, the state's largest and, not surprisingly, most susceptible city to smog.

Emissions Testing Requirements to Register Car in New Mexico

All Bernalillo County residents and those who commute 60 days or more per year into the county, must have their vehicles pass a smog check. Without a valid emissions certificate (proof of passing), the MVD will, depending on your situation, reject either your initial car registration application or your registration renewal submission. This emissions requirement, however, does not apply to all vehicle types. The MVD offers exemptions for the following vehicles:

  • Motorcycles
  • Diesel-powered vehicles
  • Vehicles 1974 and older
  • Vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds
  • New vehicle sold by a dealer (proof of a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin required)
Upon passing the emissions inspection, you'll be handed, at the test site, an emissions certificate. Place high priority in filing this in a safe place. When it comes time to apply for vehicle registration or to submit a registration renewal form, you'll need the following certificate information:

  • Emissions certificate number
  • NM Smog check station number
  • Analyzer number
  • Test date

If you have questions about emissions testing, or need help in finding a smog inspection site, call the City of Albuquerque Vehicle Pollution Management Division at (505) 764-1110.
