Whether your license plate is lost, stolen or illegible, you must, by New Mexico law, apply for a replacement. Otherwise, you'll risk being stopped and ticketed, regardless if you provide proof of legal vehicle registration.

Replace Car Tags or License Plates in NM

You'll need to visit your local MVD field office with:

  • Proof of identity.
  • Your current NM car registration certificate.
  • Your remaining license plate, if available.
  • Proper payment to cover $17 fee for replacement plates. This fee pertains to standard license plates. You will be charged more if you request specialized license plates.

Though a police report is not required when applying for replacement license plates, it's in your best interest to file a report with your local police department. This way you'll be protected from being falsely accused should your license plate or plates be used for illegal purposes.
