Before submitting an application for personalized license plates (also known as prestige or vanity plates), educate yourself on the MVD's guidelines for license plate numbers. 

Custom License Plate Restrictions

  • You are limited to a maximum of seven characters (six for motorcycle plates). 
  • Characters include: numbers, letters, apostrophes ('), dashes (–), spaces, the plus symbol (+) and the Spanish N (ñ).
  • The MVD cannot provide you with a license plate number already in use.
  • The MVD will reject any license plate number deemed offensive or in bad taste.

Order New Mexico Personalized Plate

To order a vanity license plate, provide the MVD with:

  • A completed Application for Personalized Plate (MVD form 10199). This can be downloaded from the MVD's website. Space is provided for three license number submissions.
  • Payment for personalized plate in addition to regular vehicle registration fees. 

You can submit the application payment either in person, or by mailing to:

You'll receive your personalized plates in about eight to 10 weeks. 

New Mexico Specialty Plates

The MVD also offers a long list of specialty plates ranging from military service to colleges to organizations and causes. These plates have different requirements and fees. For information on a particular license plate, contact the MVD or visit its website.
