In North Dakota, the titling and vehicle registration processes are linked. If you bought your car from a dealership, the dealer probably will take care of the registration and titling for you.

But, here's how to register your car on your own.

ND Register Car Procedure

1) Go to a motor vehicle branch office.
2) Bring the properly assigned title.
3) Bring some sort of personal identification (such as a driver's license).
4) Complete an Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of Vehicle form (SFN 2872); download the form from the NDDOT site.
5) Complete a Damage Disclosure Statement (only for vehicles less than nine years old); download the form from the NDDOT site.
6) Pay the 5% sales tax.
7) Pay the applicable car registration fees.
8) Pay the $5 title fee.

If you're relocating to North Dakota and want to apply for your title and registration, you essentially follow the same process. Just be sure to have your out-of-state title or Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) with you.

Smog Check or Emissions Testing

The state doesn't require an emissions test before you register or title your vehicle. In fact, there isn't a vehicle smog inspection program in North Dakota.
