Unlike in many states, the process to replace a car title isn't too cumbersome in North Dakota.

That's a good thing, because your title is an important document that should be replaced as soon as you notice it's damaged or missing.

ND Duplicate Title Process

To replace a damaged or lost title:

1) Complete a Certificate of Title and Registration of a Motor Vehicle (SFN 2872); download it via the NDDOT site.
2) Be sure to include the reason for the request on the application.
3) Have the title owner sign the application.
4) Take the form to a motor vehicle branch office.
5) Pay the $5 fee for replacement titles.

A bill of sale isn't required as part of this process.

Expect to receive your duplicate title in the mail within two weeks. If there's a lien recorded on the title, the document will be sent to the lienholder. Unless, you present a  completed and signed Release of Lien by Legal Owner (SFN 2876)to the NDDOT.

Questions About ND Title Transfers

While replacing a damaged or lost title is simple, other title issues can be confusing and complex. Should you need assistance with a title or vehicle registration matter, contact the NDDOT at (701) 328-2725.
