OH Vehicle Registration Procedure

1) Visit a deputy registrar's office
2) Bring the vehicle title (originals only - no copies)
3) Bring acceptable personal identification (such as a driver's license or Ohio ID Card)
4) Pay the applicable fees

If you're new to the state, your car must pass a vehicle inspection, which can be done at the deputy registrar's office. It's not a safety inspection. Instead, it's to confirm your car's make, model, body type, and vehicle identification number (VIN). The inspection costs $3.50.

OH Car Registration Notes

Registrations can be valid for one or two years; it's up to you. Fees vary according to a number of factors, including the length of the registration, the type of vehicle, and where the vehicle is registered.

Only the car's owner can apply for its registration, or someone given power of attorney rights from the owner (acceptable identification must be provided).

What About Smog Check/Emissions Testing?

Those who intend to register a used car in one of seven northeast Ohio counties (Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit) must pass a smog or emissions test first. That includes those relocating to these counties.

Most vehicles will need to repeat this inspection every two years in order to be eligible for a car registration renewal.

For complete inspection information, including locations and hours of operation, consult the Ohio E-Check site or call (800) CAR-TEST.
