The Buckeye State gives you four registration renewal options.

Online

Go to the OPLATES section on the BMV site to renew with this method.

Enter your license plate number and the last four digits of your Social Security number to start the process. Then, follow the rest of the instructions provided to finish this task.

Pay your renewal fee with a MasterCard, VISA, Discover, or American Express credit card, or with a check.

Phone

Call (866) 675-2837 to renew by phone using the automated system. Be ready to provide your license plate number, Social Security number, and payment method (credit card or check).

Mail

Just complete the renewal card you received, and send it back in the envelope provided, along with a check or money order for your payment.

In Person

Visit a deputy registrar office with acceptable identification (such as your driver's license or state ID) and payment for the registration fee (cash, check, or money order). It helps to have your current registration, although it's not required.

OH Smog Check/Emissions Testing

Residents with vehicles registered in one of seven northeast Ohio counties (Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit) must pass a smog or emissions test every two years in order to renew their car registration.

However, there are some exemptions. For instance, vehicles made within the past four model years don't have to be tested.

OH Vehicle Registration Renewal Notes

Not all renewal options are available for everyone. However, you can always renew your registration in person.

Will your car registration expire within 10 days? Or, has it already expired? Then, renew its registration at a deputy registrar branch.

Late renewals carry a $20 penalty, in addition to the renewal fee. Renewals can either last for one or two years. Renewal costs vary by where you live and the length of the renewal period.
