Ohio's smog check or emissions testing program only affects seven counties in northeast Ohio: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit.

If you have a car registered in these counties, it must be smog or emissions tested every two years in order for you to renew its vehicle registration. Odd-numbered model year cars are tested in odd-numbered years; even-numbered cars are tested in even-numbered years.

Additionally, if you move into an E-Check county with a used car, it must pass the emissions test before you can complete its car registration.

Testing is free and can be done at E-Check testing locations scattered throughout these counties; appointments aren't taken. A waiver can sometimes be issued to car owners whose vehicle failed the emissions test and substantial efforts have been made to improve the problem.

OH Emissions Testing Exceptions

Not all cars face a smog inspection. For example, cars made in the last four model years are exempt from testing.
