Required Emissions Testing for Car Registration in OR

In the state of Oregon, a smog check is required only of vehicles in the Portland and Medford areas, to include the surrounding communities of the Rogue Valley. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) website provides a complete list of smog check locations.

Smog Inspection Requirements

Your vehicle must meet the following inspection requirements, in order to pass an emissions test:

  • All emissions equipment is intact and fully functional.
  • No part of the vehicle is visibly smoking.
  • The general condition of the vehicle is safe.
  • Vehicle models made after 1996 show on-board diagnostics (OBD) to be “ready,” and in working order.
It is advisable not to smoke in the vehicle prior to testing, and to drive the vehicle long enough to warm up the engine, prior to reaching the testing site.

Vehicle Registration

You can register your vehicle online by visiting the Registration Renewal page of the DMV website. You can also register by mail, by sending all documents and required fees to the following address:

OR DMV Headquarters
1905 Lana Ave. NE
Salem, OR 97314
(503) 945-5000

If you would like to renew in person, consult the DMV website for an office near you.

In addition to proof of an emissions inspection, you must present proof of vehicle insurance, your registration renewal notice, and the $86 register car fee. If you have misplaced your renewal notice, submit a completed Application for Registration in its place.
