In the state of Oregon, you can apply for a salvage title within 30 days of your vehicle being totaled. In order to obtain a salvage title, submit the following to a local DMV branch:

  • Current vehicle title.
  • Completed Application for Salvage Title, including the odometer reading for vehicles 10 years old or newer.
  • Release of interest, in the form of a bill of sale, signed title, or lien release, if you’ve recently purchased the vehicle from another party.
  • $17 salvage title fee.

Rebuilt Auto

If you have recently rebuilt a vehicle from salvaged parts, or you have purchased a vehicle that was built from salvaged parts, you must obtain a title labeled as “reconstructed.” A reconstructed vehicle is defined as:

  • One whose body resembles a particular make and model.
  • One that was not built by a manufacturer, or in a factory where the make and model was assigned.
  • One that is not is a replica, or a motor truck built from a component kit.

Reconstructed Vehicle Titles


You can apply for a Reconstructed Title by completing the following steps:

  1. Submit the completed Application for Title and Registration, current title or salvage title, and release of interest from previous owners, to the DMV.
  2. Pass an emissions test, if you live in the Portland or Medford areas.
  3. Pass a VIN inspection at a local DMV branch.
  4. Submit bills of sale for all major parts used in the reconstruction.
  5. Choose your license plates.
  6. Pay all title, vehicle registration, and plate fees.
