RI Smog/Safety Testing Details

You can complete all the required tests (safety, emissions, and gas cap) at the same visit to a Rhode Island- certified Emissions and Safety Testing inspection station.

The tests cost $39, and you'll receive a two-year validation sticker (to be placed on the car's windshield) if you pass them all.

If Your Vehicle Fails the Safety and Emissions Tests

Should your can flunk any of the three tests, it can't receive its inspection sticker.

For the safety and gas cap inspection, you must make the necessary repairs to comply with safety and emissions standards. For the emissions test, you must make the repairs to correct the problematic issues. However, for emissions repairs, you may qualify for one of three types of waivers, depending on the circumstances.
