Rhode Island features a three-pronged approach to vehicle inspections that includes safety, emissions, and gas cap testing.

These tests don't necessarily have to be completed before the vehicle registration, but they can be required before you can renew your car's registration.

RI Inspection Details

Every two years, most cars must pass all three tests, which can be completed at the same visit to a state-certified inspection location. The tests cost $39.

Should you car pass all the tests, you'll receive an inspection sticker to placed on the windshield.

Inspection Exceptions

If you bought your car new from a dealer, you don't need to worry about safety, gas cap, or emissions testing until it reaches 24,000 miles or 24 months, whichever occurs first. Antique vehicles are exempt from testing, along with a few others.

Inspection Failures

Those whose cars fail any of the tests qualify for a free re-test if they bring their cars back to the same inspection location within 30 days.

Your vehicle must pass the safety and gas cap re-tests to qualify for a sticker. If your car flunks the emissions testing, you may be eligible for one of three smog waivers, if it meets certain standards.
