Your vehicle title is one of your most important documents, so replace it as soon as you notice it's illegible or missing by following these steps.

Apply for a Replacement RI Car Title

Start by completing the duplicate/lost title form, available through the DMV site. The form must be notarized, and taken to the DMV office in Pawtucket (located at 100 Main St.) or mailed to that address.

Replacement titles cost $51.50. You don't need to provide the bill of sale to get your title.

Important Duplicate Title Notes

Only the owner(s) listed on the title may apply for a replacement title.

If there's a lien on the vehicle, the duplicate title gets sent to the lienholder. If the lien has been paid, the car owner should include a lien release form, which will allow the title to be sent to the car owner.

You can't get replacement titles for cars that are over nine years old; contact the Rhode Island DMV vehicle registration division at (401) 462-4368 for more information about this and title transfer processes for these vehicles.

The Pawtucket branch is open from 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. through the workweek. In-person duplicate title requests require 7-10 business days for processing, while mailed-in applications take three-to-six weeks.
