Here's how to apply for your salvage title/rebuilt auto title.

RI Rebuilt Auto Title Process

It's best to start by downloading the salvage inspection form (TR-5) from the DMV site. After you complete the form, you should send the notarized application, a copy of the salvage title, the certificate of salvage repair, and a check or money order for $56.50 to:

RI Division of Motor Vehicles
100 Main St.
Pawtucket, RI 02680

Afterwards, an inspection appointment will be made.

Rebuilt Auto Inspection

Bring the following items with you to the inspection:

  • Bill of sale.
  • Salvage title.
  • Photos of the vehicle before the repair work.
  • Insurer appraisal report.
  • Valid Rhode Island drivers license or state ID card.
  • Work orders for your repairs (no copies - originals only).
  • Receipts for labor to repair the vehicle (no copies - originals only).
  • Receipts for parts that include the vehicle identification number for each part (no copies - originals only).
Failing to bring all the required documents may result in the need to set another appointment, and cost you another $56.50. Need to cancel your appointment? Do so by calling (401) 462-5736 at least 24 hours in advance.

If your car passes the inspection and the paperwork meets the DMV standards, you'll be issued a reconstructed salvage title.

The salvage or rebuilt auto process can be confusing, so call (401) 588-3006 for clarification.

Getting a Vehicle History Report

Shopping for used cars? If so, consider getting a vehicle history report (VHR), which can reduce the uncertainty and worry about your decision.

These reports offer a look at the ownership, transfer of titles, accident history, and other factors concerning the vehicle history. Having this knowledge can help you determine the true value of a car, as well as the potential problems you might face as its new owner.
