How do I obtain first time vehicle registration in South Carolina? South Carolina
How to Register Cars
Before registering your vehicle, you must pay vehicle property taxes in your county of residence. Contact your county treasurer's office for details.
You may apply for a car registration by completing Form 400, Application for Certificate of Title/Registration. This form may be submitted by mail if desired. If needed, your vehicle's out-of-state title will be verified with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.
Please keep in mind that the SC DMV requires proof of financial responsibility for all drivers, although there are no requirements for safety inspections, emissions testing, or smog checks. You must provide the name of your auto insurance company, not the name of the agent, before your vehicle registration can be processed. If you have a good driving record, you may register as an uninsured motorist by paying a $550 annual fee. However, this provides no protection in the event you are involved in an auto accident.
There is a $15 fee to obtain a vehicle title. Car registration fees vary depending upon the type of vehicle and the model year.
