Can I purchase a car if it has a lost title?
You could, but it's not a good idea. Without a title, you won’t be the legal owner and cannot register the car. If the car has a lost title, do not hand over any money until the owner goes into the appropriate motor vehicle agency, applies for a duplicate title, and hands the duplicate title over. A lost car title is a recipe for disaster; the person selling you the car could possibly not even legally own the car.
If by chance you did buy a car with a lost title, you will have to go into the motor vehicle office and prove you're the legal owner by producing a Bill of Sale and other documentation the state asks for. Then you will have to apply for a new title yourself.
