If you've lost your license plates and car tags, you will need to complete Form 452 at your local South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office or on the SC DMV website. After paying the $6 replacement fee, you'll receive a new tag number.

Please keep in mind that as a security precaution you'll be issued standard tags even if you previously ordered personalized license plates with your vehicle registration. Fortunately, you can reapply for your personalized license plates using the same message you had before the loss or damage after one year.

If you have additional license plate and tag questions, you may call the SC DMV at (803) 896-9638 for more information.

Duplicate Car Titles

Because your title provides proof of legal ownership, you won't be able to sell your vehicle or complete the initial car registration process without this document.

If your original title was lost or damaged, you can request a duplicate by visiting the nearest SC DMV office with a completed copy of Form 400, Application for Certificate of Title/Registration to the address listed on the form. There is a $15 fee for a duplicate title and you may submit your application by mail if this is more convenient.
