Personalized license plates or vanity plates can be a fun way for South Carolina drivers to add a special touch to their vehicles. The SC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers many different custom plate options, ranging from "Gone Fishing" plates to NASCAR plates.

SC Personalized Plate Application Process

Complete Form MV-95 on the SC DMV website or at your local DMV office to apply for the custom license plate design of your choice. If you want a license plate that displays a personalized message, complete Form MV-96 and provide up to three acceptable options for your plates.

When applying for specialty plates, you will want to keep in mind that special restrictions are placed on some designs. For example, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority license plates require a current membership card for you to be eligible. Gold Star Family plates are only available for immediate family members of fallen service personnel.

The fee for your personalized plates and vanity plates will depend upon the type of plate design you choose. Fees are in addition to standard vehicle registration charges and generally range from $35 to $100.

However, many of the license plate designs do include a donation to support a charitable organization. For example, custom plates featuring the name of a South Carolina college or university include a $40 donation into the school's scholarship fund.
