Before you operate motor vehicles on South Dakota (SD) roadways get the autos registered with the Motor Vehicles Division (MVD).  If you are relocating to SD, you have up to 90 days after you relocate to the state to register your car or truck.

South Dakota Car Registration

To complete the vehicle registration process on your auto, visit the treasurer’s office in the county where you reside. The SD MVD website list county treasurer office locations, telephone, and fax numbers under “County Office Locations.”

Documents you should bring with you to the county treasurer’s office include:

  • Your valid SD drivers license.
  • Motor vehicle bill of sale.
  • Auto dealer price certification document or a vehicle purchase order.
If you have a copy of the auto title, bring that to the treasurer’s office with you as well.

Completing the South Dakota Motor Vehicles Registration Application

Complete Form MVD 608 (Application for Motor Vehicle Title and Registration). Areas that you will populate on the register car application include:

  • Auto title number.
  • Odometer reading.
  • Your drivers license number and street mailing address (including city, state, and zip code).
  • Date you purchased the motor vehicle.
  • How much the vehicle cost when you purchased it.
  • Lienholder name and address (if the auto is financed).
Sign and date the bottom of the application. Pay the three percent excise tax (based on the vehicle’s purchase price).

SD does not conduct a smog or emissions inspection on autos when you register them in the state. Your motor vehicle also does not have to undergo a smog check or emissions testing when you renew your car registration.

Registration renewals are conducted annually in SD. Cost of your annual renewal fees are listed on your registration card. To avoid receiving a traffic ticket, make sure that you carry the card on you each time you operate your motor vehicle.
