Before you operate motor vehicles on South Dakota (SD) roadways get the autos registered with the Motor Vehicles Division (MVD). If you are relocating to SD, you have up to 90 days after you relocate to the state to register your car or truck.
Documents you should bring with you to the county treasurer’s office include:
SD does not conduct a smog or emissions inspection on autos when you register them in the state. Your motor vehicle also does not have to undergo a smog check or emissions testing when you renew your car registration.
Registration renewals are conducted annually in SD. Cost of your annual renewal fees are listed on your registration card. To avoid receiving a traffic ticket, make sure that you carry the card on you each time you operate your motor vehicle.

To complete the vehicle registration process on your auto, visit the treasurer’s office in the county where you reside. - Auto dealer price certification document or a vehicle purchase order.
Completing the South Dakota Motor Vehicles Registration Application
Complete Form MVD 608 (Application for Motor Vehicle Title and Registration). Areas that you will populate on the register car application include:- Auto title number.
- Odometer reading.
- Your drivers license number and street mailing address (including city, state, and zip code).
- Date you purchased the motor vehicle.
- How much the vehicle cost when you purchased it.
- Lienholder name and address (if the auto is financed).
