You are required to carry your auto registration card on you whenever you operate a motor vehicle in the state, and the South Dakota (SD) Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) administers the auto registration renewal process in the state.

How to Renew Your South Dakota Car Registration

About 80-90 days before your annual vehicle registration is scheduled to expire, the MVD will send a renewal postcard in the mail to your home address. SD car registration renewals are scheduled annually based on the resident’s last name. For example, if your last name starts A-C, you will renew in January.

Each vehicle that you have registered with SD will appear on the renewal postcards.

To complete the renewal process:

  1. Review your name and address on the renewal card for accuracy.
  2. Fill in the updated odometer reading from each motor vehicle listed on the card.
  3. Contact your county treasurer’s office to notify them of changes to your registration (i.e. name, auto title number).
You can complete the card and return it via first class mail. You can also visit your county treasurer’s office in person to finalize your register car renewal.

County treasurer offices are listed at the SD MVD website under “County Office Locations.” Dial (605) 773-3541 should you have questions regarding your SD auto registration renewal.

SD does not require autos to pass a smog or emissions inspection in order to register the vehicle. The state also does not require your motor vehicle to pass a smog check or emissions testing to renew your annual auto registration.
