The South Dakota (SD) Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) manages the vehicle registration process in the state.

Motor Vehicle Registration Inspection Requirements in South Dakota

Unlike many states, the SD MVD does not require that your auto undergo smog and emissions testing in order to complete the car registration process. You also do not have to schedule and undergo a smog check on your motor vehicle in each year when you complete your registration renewal.

However, that doesn’t mean you should throw caution to the wind, so to speak.

By giving your auto regular tune-ups and service repairs, you can help to keep the SD air clean. As the air quality in SD remains solid, residents can continue to save money by not having to pay annual smog and emissions inspection fees in addition to your regular register car fees.
