In South Dakota (SD) initial vehicle registration and annual car registration renewals are handled through the Motor Vehicles Division (MVD). You will save money in SD when it comes to annual smog and emissions testing.

South Dakota Emissions Requirements to Register Motor Vehicles

Unlike most other states, SD does not require that your auto pass an emissions inspection or a smog check before you complete the register car process. County treasurer offices work with the MVD to register autos.

You must visit the treasurer office in the county where you live to register your motor vehicle. Bring your valid SD drivers license with you to the office. If you are registering a new car or truck, also bring a copy of the bill of sale with you.

It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to register your motor vehicle in SD. Carry your registration card on you every time you operate a motor vehicle. Doing so can help you avoid a traffic ticket.
