Visit the treasurer’s office in the county where you live to transfer titles on used cars in South Dakota (SD). County treasurer office street addresses and telephone numbers are listed at the SD Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) website under “County Office Locations.”

If you are the buyer of the auto, on the actual title write your name and address in the assignment section. Ask the seller to print his name and street mailing address on the title, too.

Write the odometer reading on the actual title. Sign and date the title in the presence of a licensed notary public.

Complete the South Dakota Auto Title Application

You must complete the below title transfer steps to finalize the buy car and sell car process in SD.

After you sign and date the actual title, complete Form MV 608 (Application for Motor Vehicle Title and Registration). To do this:

  1. Select “Transfer” at the top of the MVD application.
  2. Provide the car title number.
  3. Fill in the vehicle identification number (is part of the vehicle history).
  4. Write in the odometer reading.
  5. Give the auto make, model, and year.
  6. List the purchase price off the bill of sale.
  7. Provide the lien holder name and address (if the auto is financed).
  8. Sign and date the bottom of the application.
Review the data thoroughly before you submit it. Data you provide on the application becomes a part of the vehicle history report (VHR). The SD VHR remains with the auto indefinitely.

NOTE: Remember, if you’re the buyer, you’ll probably want to complete the vehicle registration process at the same time as the title transfer process.
