The South Dakota (SD) Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) is the first place that you will contact should you lose, damage, or misplace your car title. This is the same office that you contact when you buy or sell an auto and need to complete the title transfer process.

Replace Your Lost South Dakota Motor Vehicle Title

To replace your lost title, download Form MV 010 (Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title) from the MVD website. You can complete the duplicate title application online. To fill out the application provide:

  • Motor vehicle odometer reading.
  • Vehicle identification number.
  • Make, model, body, and weight of the auto.
  • Your name and street address (including city, state, and zip code).
  • Lienholder name and address (if the auto is financed).
If you need help with this information, you might be able to obtain some of it from your vehicle registration card.

Sign and date the bottom of the SD MVD application in the presence of a licensed notary public. Pay the $10 title replacement fee using a check or money order.

If you have it, include a copy of the auto bill of sale with the application. Mail the completed replacement titles application and fee to:

Duplicate Title Section
Division of Motor Vehicles
445 East Capitol Ave.
Pierre, SD 57501
