How do I obtain a salvage title in South Dakota? South Dakota
Individual South Dakota (SD) residents and auto insurance companies that take ownership of permanently damaged used cars and vehicles that will be restored as a rebuilt auto must apply for a salvage title. SD residents and auto insurance companies have 30 days to apply for the title.

How to Obtain a Motor Vehicle Salvage Title in South Dakota
Contact the SD Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) to apply for one or more salvage titles. You need to complete Form MV 610 (South Dakota Salvage, Recovered Theft, and Uniform Damage Disclosure Statement).On the form provide (the form is available online at the SD MVD website under “Form”):
- Year, make, and model of the damaged auto.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Title number.
- Whether the motor vehicle is savaged due to theft or damage (i.e. flood).
Applying for a Motor Vehicle Salvage Title in South Dakota
You must also complete Form MV 608 (Application for Motor Vehicle Title and Registration). To fill out the application:- Select “Salvage Total Loss” at the top of the application.
- Provide the motor vehicle title number.
- Write down the odometer reading (it becomes a part of the vehicle history).
- Fill in the bill of sale purchase price.
- List the lien holder’s name and address (if the auto is financed).
- Sign and date the bottom of the application.
