Then, visit the SD MVD. This is the same agency that you will contact to complete your car registration.

Replace Lost License Plates in South Dakota

Complete Form DMV-303 (Application for Replacement of License Plates, Validation Stickers or Lost Title Document). To complete this form:

  1. Write your first and last names as the top of the application.
  2. Provide the make, model, and year of the auto.
  3. List the license plate number of the car tags you need replaced
  4. Fill in the date and the county that the county that the motor vehicle was purchased in.
  5. Certify that you are actually lost the license plate at the bottom of the application.
  6. Sign and date the application in the presence of a clerk at the MVD treasurer office in the county where you live (a list of treasurer offices is available at the MVD website under “County Office Locations”).

License plate fees are based upon the weight and year of your motor vehicle. Make your check or money order to cover the cost of the fee out to the “South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation.”
