Each auto custom plate, specialty plate, and personalized plate in South Dakota (SD) is processed through the Motor Vehicles Division (MVD). Personalized plates must have between two and seven characters.
Pay the applicable personalized, vanity, or special license plate fee and mail your completed application and fee to:

The annual renewal for the specialty plates is the same amount as the fee to initially receive the custom license plates.
Ordering Personalized License Plates in South Dakota
Complete Form MV 239 (South Dakota Personalized License Plate Application) to receive your personalized plate. To fill out the application:- Print your name and street mailing address.
- Write in the make and model of the motor vehicle.
- Include the title and vehicle identification numbers.
- Fill in the characters that you want included on the custom license plate.
- Indicate whether your vehicle is a car, truck, mobile home, or motorcycle.
- Sign and date the license plate application.
Obtaining Specialty Plates in South Dakota
Visit the MVD website “License Plates” page to order a special plate. Review the special license plate you want then complete Form MV 101 (South Dakota Special License Plate Application). To complete the specialty plates application, provide:- Your first and last names and street mailing address.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Type of special plate you want (i.e. tribal, firefighter).
- Sign and date the bottom of the application.
South Dakota License Plate Fees
Fees to order vanity plates, special plates, and personalized plates in SD are as follows:- Personalized license plate for car, truck, or mobile home: $25
- Personalized license plate for motorcycle: $20
- Special or custom license plate for construction motor vehicle: $25
- Other special license plates (i.e. firefighter, amateur radio, Purple Heart): $10
- Mailing fee (paid for each license plate): $5
