If your license plate goes missing, you must, regardless of the reason, apply for a replacement. Otherwise, if you attempt to drive, you will be ticketed, regardless if you provide proof of valid car registration.

Before applying for a replacement license plate with the Tennessee DOR you must first file a report with the police. This will protect you should the lost or stolen plate be used for illegal purposes. You will need, as verification, the police agency, the presiding officer's name, and complaint form (police report) number.
