Before submitting an application for a personalized plate, or what some call a vanity plate, you'll need to choose at least one custom plate number. The DOR requires a minimum of three characters and a maximum of seven. Only numbers and letters allowed. Punctuation marks not accepted.

TN Personalized Plates and Vanity Plates

To apply, submit to your County Clerk:

  • A completed Application for Tennessee Personalized License Plate. You'll be given space for three license plate number selections. Print your leading number in the box marked "First Choice." Keep in mind that the DOR will not issue a license plate number already in use, and will reject any submission it deems as offensive or in bad taste.
  • Payment for $35 custom license plate fee. This is in addition to the state's regular registration fee.
If approved, your license plates will be waiting for pick-up at your County Clerk's office.

Tennessee Specialty Plates

The DOR also offers a large selection of specialty plates. Plate categories are varied and include Tennessee colleges, civic organizations, military service, and more.

Most specialty license plates cost $35, but in addition to regular car registration rates, some do charge higher fees. For requirements, especially military plates, contact your local County Clerk.
