The titling and registration processes in Utah are intertwined; you can complete both at the same time at the DMV office.

However, you may not have to contend with the vehicle registration or title procedures. That's because when you buy a vehicle from a dealer, the dealer typically handles both tasks for you.

But, if you need to handle this on your own, here's what to do.

How to Apply for a UT Car Registration

First, make sure you have a properly assigned title from the previous owner. If you don't have the title, you're going to delay the process and have to apply for a duplicate title before proceeding.

Take the title along with the following to the DMV office:

Safety inspection (if applicable)
VIN certificate (if the vehicle is being titled/registered in Utah for the first time)
Emission certificate (if applicable)
Completed title application (if the vehicle is being titled in Utah for the first time)
Current registration (if you're relocating to Utah)
Payment for the registration and title fees (total cost varies)

UT Safety and Emissions Testing

Most cars to be registered in Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, or Weber counties must pass a smog check and a safety inspection before registration. New cars, motorcycles, and pre-1968 model year cars are exempt from the emissions test.

Most vehicles registered throughout Utah must also pass a safety inspection before registration; new cars can skip this test, too.

Need More Info?

See the DMV site for details about both the emissions and safety tests. Or, call the DMV at (800) DMV-UTAH for these and other register car matters.
