Ordering UT Personalized Plates

Start by downloading Form TC-817 (Application For Personalized License Plates) from the DMV site. Then, fill out all the applicable sections of the form.

As you'll notice, you can use between five (specialty plates) and seven (standard license plates) characters. You can choose any combination of letters or numbers. But, to secure that combination, it must be available and approved by the DMV. You can test for the availability of a combination on the DMV site.

Once you've completed the application, send it along with your check payment to the address listed on the form.

Personalized Plate Fees

Ordering costs for custom plates vary, but generally run between $58-$63 (that includes the postage). Some specialty plates require other fees or contributions.

Remember, the cost for your custom license plate is in addition to your car registration fees. And, you'll pay an extra $10 each renewal period to keep your personalized plate combination.
