All cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, jitneys, trucks and trailers must register with the Vermont DMV. And whether the vehicle was purchased in or out-of-state has no bearing on this requirement.

Car Registration for Used Vehicle

To apply for vehicle registration, provide the DMV with:

  • A Certificate of Title properly assigned to you by all names on the title and bills of sale.
  • An Odometer Disclosure Statement if the vehicle is nine years old or newer.
  • A completed Vermont Motor Vehicle Registration, Tax and Title Application.
  • If the vehicle was registered to you in a different state you'll need to provide proof of paying taxes on the vehicle. If not, you'll be charged a tax based on the vehicle's value as determined by the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA).
  • Payment for registration fee ($65 for one year; $122 for two years) and taxes, if applicable.

VT Vehicle Registration for New Car

Normally the dealer will submit your car registration papers. But if you opt to do it on your own, here's what you'll need to provide the DMV:

  • A Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO).
  • A New Vehicle Information Statement, if the vehicle was purchased in Canada.
  • A bill of sale.
  • An Odometer Disclosure Statement.
  • A completed Vermont Motor Vehicle Registration, Tax and Title Application.
  • Payment for registration fee ($65 for one year; $122 for two years) and Purchase and Use Tax.

Register Car After Relocating to Vermont

You have 60 days after establishing VT residency to register your car with the DMV and obtain Vermont license plates.

Emissions Testing for Smog and Safety Inspection

The state does not require a smog check for emissions. But your car will need to pass a safety inspection within 15 days of the registration date.
