The Vermont DMV will mail you a computer-generated registration renewal notice approximately three weeks prior to the expiration date of your car registration. Depending on your situation, you'll have three renewal options: in person, mail, online.

VT Car Registration Renewal by Mail

Complete your registration renewal form and mail it, along with a check for the fee posted on the renewal notice, to:

    DMV Main Office
    120 State St.
    Montpelier, VT 05603-0001

You'll receive your renewed registration within about two weeks.

Vermont Vehicle Registration Renewal in Person

In-person options include:

  • The Main DMV office in Montpelier.
  • Participating town clerk offices.
  • Self-serve kiosks located at most DMV branch offices.
When you arrive, you'll need:

  • Your registration renewal notice. If you did not receive one, you'll need to complete a registration application (form TAVD 119).
  • Proof of identity.
  • Payment for registration renewal fee ($65 one year, $122 two years).
You'll exit with your updated registration.

Vermont Registration Renewal Online

To use this option, you'll need:

  • A debit or credit card (Discover, MasterCard, Visa).
  • Your license plate number.
  • Your drivers license number.

The online form can be found on the DMV's website. After submitting, you should receive your new car registration documents in four to six days.

Smog Check Requirements to Register Car in Vermont

Emissions testing for smog does not exist in Vermont. Your vehicle does not have to be tested or inspected for emissions to qualify for vehicle registration. You will, however, be required to take your car in for an annual safety inspection.
