Inspection Requirements to Register Car in VT
After initial vehicle registration, you'll have 15 days to have your car inspected. All tests must be conducted at a state-approved inspection station.When you arrive, you'll need to present:
- Proof of car registration.
- Proof of car insurance.
NOTE: Inspection payment is separate from regular car registration fees.
The inspector will then check the following:- The car's body.
- Tires and wheels.
- Steering and suspension.
- Brakes.
- Lighting and electrical system.
- Glass.
- Body.
- Exhaust system.
- Fuel system.
- Emission system.
Pass and you'll receive an inspection sticker that must be affixed to the windshield. Fail and you'll need to have the vehicle repaired and retested. You do not need proof of vehicle inspection during registration renewal.

Emissions Testing for Smog
Vermont does not require a smog check per se. Your vehicle, during the safety inspection, will be checked for emissions, or what the DMV refers to as an on-board diagnostics (OBDI) inspection.
