Vermont Salvage Title for Rebuilt Auto

By law, you must apply for a salvage title within 15 days of either acquiring a salvage vehicle or after your insurance company declares your vehicle a total loss due to accident or weather-related causes. To apply, provide the DMV with:

  • A completed Rebuilt/Salvage Title Application (DMV form TA-VT-17). This can be conveniently downloaded from the DMV's website.
  • The current, existing title.
  • Any other documents that the DMV may request for establishing ownership, such as a vehicle registration certificate.
  • Proof of vehicle identification number (VIN) verification. This must be completed by local law enforcement or by designated DMV employees. When you arrive for verification, be prepared to provide a bill of sale or, if applicable, receipts for component parts.
  • Payment for $31 salvage title fee.

Titles, Used Cars and the Importance of a Vehicle History Report (VHR)

Before buying a used car, be sure to order a VHR. This will allow you to check the car's entire vehicle history, including number of owners, service records, accidents, emissions testing results and much more.

You should also order a VHR if you're selling. It will immediately establish trust among potential buyers and help you decide on a fair asking price.

Vehicle history reports can be conveniently ordered online.
