If you discover your license plate or license plates missing, you'll need to contact the DMV and apply for new car tags. The sooner the better. By law, all passenger cars must display two license plates at all times. If only one plate is missing, you can still drive legally, but only after applying for a replacement and receiving authorization from the DMV.

Apply for VT Replacement License Plates

To apply, provide the DMV with:

  • A completed Replacement Plate Application (DMV form TA-VD-16). This can be conveniently downloaded from the DMV's website. If both plates are lost or stolen, you'll receive a new license plate number.
  • Proof of identification (drivers license, vehicle registration).
  • If your license plates are set to expire within the next 30 days, you'll also be required, when applying, to renew your car registration.
  • Payment for replacement plate(s), $10 each.

NOTE: If only one of your two plates is missing, carry a copy of your DMV-certified Replacement Plate Application while waiting for the replacement plate to be processed, which generally takes about 60 days.

Report Missing Vermont License Plate to Police

Though not required, you should notify the police if you think your plate was stolen. This will protect you should the plate be used for illegal purposes.
