How do I order personalized plates and vanity plates in Vermont? Vermont
The DMV offers personalized plates, or what some call vanity plates, to all Vermont-registered vehicles. But before applying you must decide on a custom license plate number. To aid your decision, be aware of the following restrictions:
- You are limited to a maximum of seven characters (six for mopeds, motorcycles and small trailers; five for handicapped plates; four for antique and exhibit license plates) and a minimum of two.
- Letters, numbers and spaces only. Punctuation marks, including dots and dashes, are not allowed.
- The license number cannot begin with "Z."
- Up to two numbers are allowed and must be used with a combination of one to five letters.
- The DMV will reject any submission deemed offensive or lewd.
- The DMV will reject any submission referring to a government agency.
- The DMW will reject any submission with drug-related connotations.
- The DMV will not issue a license plate number already in use.
Apply for VT Personalized Plate
To apply for a vanity license plate, provide the DMV with:- A completed Special Plate Application (DMV form TA-VD-17). This can be downloaded from the DMV's website. Be sure to include an explanation with each license number submission (three per application) or your application will be returned.
- Payment for $38, in addition to regular vehicle registration fees.
If your vanity plate number is accepted, expect about 30 days for processing.
Vermont Specialty Plates
The DMV also offers specialty plates ranging from military service to organizational affiliations to conservation. Each plate has different requirements and fees. For more information, visit the DMV's website and look under "Special Plates."
