You can replace your Virginia (VA) car registration if you lose or damage the card. Vehicle registration cards are replaced through the VA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Virginia Motor Vehicle Registration

Personal and motor vehicle data on the registration must be the same as it was on the original registration. To replace a lost or damaged motor vehicle registration card in VA:

  1. Contact the DMV (you can also request a new card online at the DMV website).
  2. Provide your car vehicle identification number (VIN).
  3. Pay the fee for the new registration card using a credit or debit card. You can also pay for the new card with a check.
It takes about 15 days to receive the new registration card.

If you need to change your name, address, or vehicle information as part of the register car process, visit a local DMV office. You can also call the DMV at (804) 497-7100 to update the information on your car registration over the telephone.
