Contact the Virginia (VA) Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if you need to replace your car title. The VA DMV replaces auto titles in the event that the titles are lost or damaged.

Requests to replace a damaged or lost title in VA are made online via the DMV website. You can also visit a local DMV service center or dial (888) 337-4782 to request a duplicate title.

Replace a Virginia Motor Vehicle Title

To receive a replaced title in VA you need to:

  1. Fill out Form VSA 66 (Application for Supplemental Lien and Transfer Liens or Replacement and Substitute Titles). The form is available for download at the DMV website.
  2. Provide the DMV clerk with a copy of your motor vehicle registration.
  3. Show the clerk your VA drivers license.
  4. Pay the $5 title replacement fee.
You do not have to submit the vehicle’s bill of sale to the DMV as you do when you complete a title transfer.

Special Circumstances for a Duplicate Title

The duplicate title is sent to the lien holder until the auto is paid off.

If the person who owns the motor vehicle is deceased, complete Form VSA 24 (Statement of Authority to Assign Title). Sign and notarize the form. Include a copy of the deceased person’s will, a court order, or an affidavit that states that the deceased person’s property is governed by the small estate laws. Present these documents in person at a local DMV office.
