You can order vanity plates or personalized plates in Virginia (VA) through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Applications for the license plates are available online and at local DMV service centers.

Order a VA Vanity or Personalized Plate

To order a custom license plate, complete the “License Plate Application” (Form VSA 10). Information that you must provide on the application includes:

  • Type of license plate you want (i.e. collegiate, military, scenic).
  • Custom wording you want included on the plate.
  • Your first and last names and your telephone number.
  • Street mailing address (including city, state, and zip code).
  • Vehicle identification number.
  • Car or truck title number and possibly other vehicle registration information.
Mail the completed form with the applicable license plates fee to:

Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
PO Box 27412
Richmond, VA 23269-0001

Review the specialty plates that you want thoroughly, because after the plates request has gone to the manufacturer, the DMV will not issue you a refund should you wish to change the plates design.

It can take up to four weeks to receive the license plates in the mail at your home address.

Depending on the type of custom plate or personalized plate that you want, it could cost you between $10 and $50 to purchase the plate. It costs between $10 and $35 to renew plates each year.
