The DOL will either mail or e-mail (notify the DOL if you prefer e-mail notification) you a registration renewal notice well before the expiration date of your current registration. You'll then have the option of renewing in person, online or by mail.

Keep in mind that the DOL will not allow you to renew if:

  • You have any unpaid parking tickets.
  • You have any unpaid tolls. 
  • You lack proof of passing an emissions inspection, if applicable.

Bring to your local DOL office:

WA Vehicle Registration Renewal Online


To use the online option you'll need:

You can, if you so desire, collect your new car registration documents at you local DOL office usually on the same day of applying. If you opt to have your registration documents mailed, be sure, if you've moved, to notify the DOL of your current mailing address. Expect five to seven days for delivery.

Pass Smog Check and Register Car

A smog inspection is required for parts of the following counties: Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane. Tests are required every other year. Your registration renewal notice will state if your car is due for a smog check.
