The Washington DOL does not require proof of passing a car safety inspection for vehicle registration or registration renewal. Checking the brake pads, replacing worn tires and fixing broken taillights is your responsibility.

The DOL does, however, require passing a smog inspection for residents in parts of the following counties: Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane.
Tests, which are part of Washington’s Vehicle Emission Inspection Program, are required every other year. If it’s your testing year, you’ll be alerted on your registration renewal notice.
Tests must take place at a state-authorized emissions inspection station. When you arrive, be sure to have cash, check, debit or credit card to pay the $15 test fee.
If you pass, provide while registering, the DOL with proof along with:
- Proof of insurance.
- Proof of identity.
- A bill of sale.
- A properly assigned car title.
- A completed Vehicle Certificate of Ownership Application. This can be downloaded from the DOL’s website.
- Payment for registration fees, which vary by vehicle weight, and may include a subagent fee as well as an excise tax and a Regional Transit Authority tax.
NOTE: Not all areas of the five listed counties mandate emissions testing. To learn if your zip code falls in your county’s smog testing area, dial one of the following numbers:
